WEBINAR VIDEO: Building welcoming communities: Practical tools for children with disabilities

Recorded webinar | May 13, 2026 | Co-hosted by BC Healthy Communities & the City of Powell River

How can municipalities create communities where children with disabilities truly belong? This one-hour webinar delivers practical tools and evidence-based recommendations for addressing ableism and advancing inclusion in communities across British Columbia and beyond.

Grounded in four protective factors for child and youth well-being — Participation, Play, Safety, and Social Connection and Belonging — this session shows how local and Indigenous governments can transform programs, services, spaces, communications, and policies to better serve children with disabilities and their families, in alignment with the BC Accessibility Act.

Presenters include municipal staff and a Community Belonging Project Advisor, sharing lessons from a comprehensive community-led process featuring equity site visits, an environmental scan, a policy impact forum, and leadership from advisors with lived experience. The work was supported by the University of Victoria’s School of Child and Youth Care.

For those who missed the live event, resources and application tips for the Recognition Program are now available here on the BCHC website.
