Thanks to PlanH grants, West Vancouver’s WIC program is helping newcomers build stronger connections

A BCHC PlanH Community Connectedness grant has helped develop the Welcoming and Inclusive Communities (WIC) program in West Vancouver, making a significant difference in the lives of newcomers there. The program offers a variety of activities designed to foster community connections and inclusion.

In May 2024, West Vancouver’s WIC program received the BCRPA Program Excellence Award for its exceptional work in supporting newcomers. This prestigious award highlights the program’s success in creating a welcoming and inclusive environment, helping newcomers build connections, improve their quality of life, and contribute meaningfully to their new community.

One newcomer to West Vancouver, Kathryn Ding, explained how the WIC program has changed her family’s life.

“When my family arrived in West Vancouver in early 2023, we were filled with uncertainties. Everything — from the language and culture to navigating daily life — felt overwhelming. But everything began to change when we discovered the West Vancouver Community Centre and its Welcoming and Inclusive Communities program.

“From the very first Newcomers Welcome Tour, we were met with warmth, patience, and kindness. The staff and volunteers didn’t just answer our questions — they made us feel seen and valued.”

Kathryn Ding: ‘We’ve gone from feeling like outsiders to feeling rooted and connected.’

Ding’s family wasn’t just welcomed with open arms. They participated in programs that helped them integrate into the community, such as social lounges, hiking and snowshoeing workshops, cooking classes, financial literacy, career coaching and more. Through these programs, Kathryn was invited to present at the Lunar New Year celebrations for three consecutive years, gaining confidence and feeling connected to her new home.

“Through the newcomer program, we’ve gone from feeling like outsiders to feeling rooted and connected,” Ding said. “Supporting programs like WIC means supporting new residents of this beautiful community, new families with dreams of a better life, and real transformations.”

The WIC program offers a wide range of activities aimed at helping newcomers integrate into the community. These activities not only promote community involvement but also encourage physical activity, cultural appreciation, and personal development. The program includes the following activities:

Rhythm & Restore (Dance + Yoga)
Newcomers enjoyed a creative class blending eastern-inspired dance with invigorating yoga, learning steps from Persian, Turkish, Arabic and other world styles while connecting with others in the community.

Intro to Hiking on the North Shore
In 2024, newcomers explored the North Shore through workshops and guided hikes, gaining skills in clothing, gear and trip planning, while building friendships and confidence on the trails.

Socially Active – Intro to Snowshoeing
In February, the program introduced newcomers to the great outdoors with a snowshoeing session at Cypress Mountain. The event included an indoor preparation workshop, followed by a guided hiking experience that helped newcomers connect with nature and each other.

Intro to camping
This hands-on workshop series introduced newcomers to the joys of car camping in British Columbia. Participants learned about campgrounds, gear selection, and outdoor cooking, making new friends along the way and acquiring practical skills to enjoy the natural beauty of their new home.

Blackout Theatre for newcomer children
The Blackout Theatre program for children aged 9-14 provided an artistic outlet for young newcomers. Over five days, the children worked with experienced staff to explore their creativity, building confidence and friendships. The program culminated in a performance that celebrated their hard work and talent.

Mahjong workshop for beginners
This fun, hands-on workshop at the WVCC introduces newcomers to the basics of Mahjong. Led by volunteers, participants will improve their skills, enjoy friendly competition, and connect with others in a welcoming environment. No prior experience necessary.

Intro to SUP (stand-up paddleboarding)
In this workshop, a certified coach introduced newcomers to SUP, covering safety and equipment basics to get started on the water.

The WIC program continues to have a lasting impact, providing newcomers with the resources and opportunities they need to integrate fully into West Vancouver’s vibrant community.
