Youth job training program builds skills – and community – in North Cowichan

In Crofton and Chemainus, school breaks are becoming a launchpad for skill-building and connection. Thanks to a PlanH Community Connectedness grant, North Cowichan Parks and Recreation has been running a Youth Job Training Series that’s equipping rural youth with real-world skills – while strengthening their sense of community.
The initiative offers in-person training on days when school is not in session, focusing on certifications that prepare youth aged 11 to 18 for entry-level jobs. Sessions are offered at low or no cost, removing financial and transportation barriers that often limit access for rural youth.
“Youth, given the opportunity and access, are eager to learn new skills, gain experience and work toward their future goals,” said Laura McIntyre, Youth Outreach Programmer with North Cowichan Parks and Recreation. “The success of our Youth Job Training Series project has been so exciting to watch unfold.”
That success shows up in the numbers. Since the program began, 44 youth have participated in training sessions, with another 20 expected to take part in upcoming workshops. Every session has either filled or come close.
“Almost every training session was full with a waitlist of youth keen to join in on the opportunity,” said McIntyre. “We loved watching youth engage with their peers as they learned everything from cashier skills to first aid to barista coffee recipes!”
Each session not only provided a valuable certification for the youth to add to their resumes, but also encouraged peer connection, community engagement, and a sense of pride.
“Everyone had fun and walked away with a new sense of confidence, a greater connection to their community, and a certificate to add to their resume,” McIntyre said. “We are so grateful for the support of BC Healthy Communities for making it possible to bring this opportunity into our local community.”
By combining skill development with a focus on local connection, the Youth Job Training Series is helping shape a stronger, more engaged generation in North Cowichan – one course at a time.
