Port Hardy’s video report: Building a Healthier Community – With the help of PlanH
The District of Port Hardy released their final report for their 2023 Healthy Public Policy grant in the form of an innovative video.
Their 2023 grant project undertook significant efforts to promote a healthy and inclusive community, guided by its four strategic pillars, with a particular emphasis on social well-being. These efforts address critical issues such as housing, poverty reduction, harm reduction, recreation, and youth engagement. Collaboration and equity are central to their approach, bringing diverse stakeholders to the table, including First Nations, local agencies, and provincial services like Island Health and RCMP.
Access to funding, particularly through Plan H grants, has been crucial in supporting initiatives such as the creation of a service-mapping database in partnership with Help Seekers, which enhances accessibility for vulnerable populations. The district also organized a successful Wellness Fair that connected residents with local services, highlighted gaps in public awareness, and fostered social connectedness. Similarly, the Safe Place Project established a welcoming and accessible space in the town center, providing outreach services while reducing disruptions to local businesses.
Other initiatives include partnerships with organizations like the Salvation Army to expand shelter services and the implementation of free recreation programs to ensure equitable access for residents. Recognizing the challenges posed by high alcohol consumption rates in the region, the district has explored policy solutions and hosted community events like mocktail workshops to encourage healthier choices.
A Wellness Forum further underscored the importance of collaboration by addressing community crises and providing support to caregivers and service providers. These initiatives reflect the district’s commitment to fostering a resilient and connected community, with a focus on equitable access to resources and services. By leveraging grants and partnerships, Port Hardy has been able to advance its vision for a healthier and more inclusive community without overburdening its residents financially.
