The A to Z of Healthy Communities: D

Together, BCHC and Ontario Healthy Communities Coalition (one of our colleagues from the Canadian Healthy Communities Network) bring you the A to Z of Healthy Communities—a monthly spotlight for everything encompassed in the Healthy Cities movement.

D is for Determinants of Health

There are many factors that combine together and affect the health of individuals—and communities. Whether people and their communities are healthy or not, is determined by their circumstances and environment. To a large extent, factors such as where we live, the state of our environment, genetics, our income, education level, and our relationships with friends and family all have considerable impacts on health, whereas the more commonly considered factors such as access and use of health care services often have less of an impact.
