Wise; Experienced; Knowledgeable.
These are only a few words that describe the immense understanding of the world that our Elders possess.
This July BC Healthy Communities Society, in partnership with the Ministry of Health, facilitated a workshop at the 39th Annual BC Elders Gathering - hosted by the Tsawout First Nation and the W̱SÁNEĆ Nations.
The session was called “Planning for a Healthy Tomorrow”. Participants were invited to explore paths to aging-well. At the workshop, ideas were exchanged and wisdom was shared to help older adults plan for their aging journey.
As participants gathered at the tables, they were asked “Where do you see yourself in the future?” People expressed how they saw themselves giving back to the community, exercising, and traveling, among many other things. We then asked, “What do you need to do now and onwards as you age to achieve this future?” Holding this vision of their future in mind, participants explored five key aspects of healthy aging:
- health and well-being,
- social connections,
- transportation, and
Participants enthusiastically conversed about the things they already do to help them age well, and explored opportunities to improve their current situation to help them achieve the future they envisioned.
Numerous ideas were exchanged, multiple stories were shared, and by the end of this interactive session participants committed to taking a specific action to help them plan for their future so they can age-well.
This gathering catalyzed a first step to begin a new path in achieving a healthier, brighter future.
